Activity on our streets
Changes have been occurring at a rapid pace in the last year at various locations throughout the West End.
Hopefully this page will help in bringing visitors to this page uptodate on most of these changes.
Southeast corner of Denman and Robson intersection
Two years ago the former building occupying (a liquor store and the old Safeway) this site were demolished. Last month the first doors were opened on the single largest commercial streetfront development in the West End ever completed.
The first tenant is one of the largest Safeway stores in the Lower Mainland. More establishments will be opening during the next few months.
Southeast of block at Denman and Davie intersection
Three separate projects are in various of development on this block.
A new building is going up on the site of what was previously home to a variety of restaurants, pubs and lounges.
Once completed this building will have residential units on the upper levels and businesses at street level.
To the east of the building mentioned above what used to be a strictly residential site had a storefront added along the sidewalk which will house a number of businesses, some new and others that will move from their current location nearby
As of January 2009 no structural activity has begun yet on the eastern end of this block, in fact public hearings have not yet been scheduled. As per zoning notice the buildings housing several business units will be demolished. The facade (heritage) on the Bidwell side will be kept.
Davie Street makeover
Over the next few months beginning in January 2009 Davie street will undergo a major makeover. The work is well underway at the western end of Davie
Changeover at the "Gabriola Mansion" corner Davie & Nicola
Previously the home of Romano's Macaroni Grill the Mansion's main floor has been gutted and is being remodeled to reopen as a new restaurant establishment.
Northwest corner of Davie & Burrard intersection
Previously this site was home to a complex of a gas station and several businesses. About 2 years ago the structures were demolished and the site went through a soil remediation process. After being vacant for a year at the end of 2008 this community garden was installed. It will be interesting to view the results of the first plantings in the spring.
