WEST END

Vancouver - British Columbia - CANADA

"At the Movies" wall history

This mural was painted by Teresa "Wacky T." Waclawik in three and a half months during the summer of 1990. Located at the corner of Denman and Barclay Streets in Vancouver's West End, it was an important landmark that was not only popular with the community but with tourists as well. In 1993 B.C. Tel installed a phone booth which covered the artist's signature as well as part of Woody Allen and Roger Rabbit but after newspaper articles, letters and phone calls from the public, the phone booth was removed and once again the mural could be enjoyed in an untampered state.

The building was sold to a developer in 1997. Despite a petition of 1200 names, letters, a public meeting and bench ads that were sponsored by three companies including the Royal Bank of Canada to save the much loved mural, a permit was obtained on October 9, 1997 to renovate the building without including any effort to save any part of the artwork in any shape or form. The Movie Mural which attracted countless smiles remained graffiti free during its entire existence was destroyed in late June 1998 to make way for some windows and yellow stucco.

At the end of October 1997 tears appeared in the eyes of all the characters in the mural and remained there until the very end. The Mural is sadly missed by the community.
