Heritage and Older Buildings in the West End
This section is concerned with any structure in the West End that in one way or another triggers or evokes memories of a past time that is fading as the population ages. This section exists also to celebrate the efforts of those individuals who created time and priorities in their lives so that areas like Gastown, Chinatown and Strathcona were not demolished and turned into ghosts by a system with a propensity to blink at the right/wrong time and allow freeways to be its priority and legacy. Today that spirit lives on in the battle to save Mole Hill in the West End and in many other neighborhoods keeping a watchful eye on our links to the past. Many of our losses have been due to emphasis being placed on profits rather than value, on quick gain than lasting pleasure. Let's make sure the watch continues.
At the present time there are approximately 800 structures in the West End as per the boundaries stated on Page 1. Of these, approximately 200 have an obvious connection to a heritage aspect (not to be confused with a heritage designation as per the present bureaucratic system). This section will identify each one and keep track of this inventory for as long as possible. It would be nice in the future if this effort could be expanded to include other areas as well. These images reflect items making up the "older buildings" portion of the West End.
